A goodbye letter to Alcohol

The friends you told me I’d make, the places I would be able to go as long as I had you with me…they weren’t real. When I got sober I went to detox, and then to an outpatient program. For over a year I attended an early recovery group meeting once a week along with therapy and a 12-step program.

  • Then it started affecting other people but I still stood by your side.
  • I mean, damn, I can barely remember all those late night documentaries we watched on Netflix.
  • Her name is Recovery and she makes me feel good about myself…as a Person, a Father, a Spouse, and a Friend.
  • Because of you, I’ve spent nights in jail, I lost my license, my job, my marriage, and my kids won’t speak to me.
  • They deserve me without you tagging along.
  • I will rise daily without your aid and assistance.
  • It helps you to open up, reflect on your life with alcohol and guides you to reasons as to what it has done for you.

When I threw out my back, you comforted me for weeks and eased the pain.

Liam’s Letter

Always there…ready to help me relax. You also helped me through some rough periods in my life too. You were there when my parents died and helped me through the grief.

Once you start writing, you will realise that you have the ability to speak the truth about your feelings about alcohol. It helps you to open up, reflect on your life with alcohol and guides you to reasons as to what it has done for you. For me, it made me realise my feelings towards alcohol and what it has taken away from me. We may decide to re-visit the letter from time to time, as a reminder of why we cut alcohol out of our lives. There are lots of methods of quitting alcohol out there and it is very much a ‘horses for courses’ approach. This particular tool worked well with me.

She is filled with joy and gratitude and takes things one day at a time. She doesn’t judge me, get jealous, or fill my head with empty promises. She has lots of friends that she’s helped before and they’ve turned their lives around. Some took longer than others but they all help each other because they’ve been where I am today.

Dan expects to enjoy spoiling his grandson and all of the other fruits of his “best damn job ever”… retirement. You should write a goodbye letter to close that chapter in your life. Because it had a hold of you for so long, it deserves a proper goodbye. Journaling and writing are helpful stress relievers and also a good way to manage anxiety.

Clive’s Letter

After all the good times we spent, you ended up ruining my life. Because of you, I’ve spent nights in jail, I lost my license, my job, my marriage, and my kids won’t speak to me. You can spill all your emotions out onto the paper and no one has to read it. Of course, you can share it, you can burn it to increase the goodbye effect, or save it to look at later. I saved mine and wrote about it because I want accountability.

When I tried to say good-bye a few months ago, you kept teasing me. So please, don’t make this so damn hard. Let’s move on from this toxic relationship. Since this letter is not addressed to an actual person, it can be written as a journal entry, traditional letter, or whatever format that best fits you. Your goal is to tell alcohol that it will no longer be part of your life by using a long or short goodbye letter to alcohol to express your feelings. If you choose, you can save the letter, send it off in the mail, or share it with your counselor.
